Across the United States and here in Louisiana, Black communities are facing a mental health crisis that cannot be ignored. While overall suicide rates have declined in some groups, the rates among Black Americans are rising. Black youth, in particular, are experiencing one of the fastest-growing increases in suicide attempts and completions. Black men are also facing alarming rates of depression, untreated trauma, and the heavy burdens of systemic inequities.
This is more than statistics...it’s a state of emergency.
As Councilwoman for Iberia Parish District 12 and Chair of the Public Health & Safety Committee, I am declaring Black mental health a public health emergency that requires immediate response, resources, and reform.

This fight is deeply personal. As the sister of a young Black man who completed suicide after experiencing untreated trauma, I know firsthand the pain our families carry when mental health is left unspoken.
Every number is a name. Every statistic is a story. Every life lost leaves a permanent mark on our communities.
We cannot afford silence. We cannot afford to wait. Together, we must build a future where Black mental health is protected, prioritized, and resourced with the same urgency as any other public health crisis.
